My Reaction to Non-reaction (an impossible riddle)

A tick on the wall

Once spotted

Triggers involuntary itching

Prickly screaming along my skin

A phone call from a loved one

Once hung up

Triggers involuntary exhaustion

Prickly agitation in my gut

A daughter’s expression of love

Once uttered

Triggers involuntary attachment

Prickly consolation slows my heart

Is non-reaction ever really possible?

Or is it the awareness of such

Simple shared humanity

That opens me up to the living

  1. Good stuff. I heard that emotion is the impetus for every thought and gesture, no matter how seemingly well it fits into the rational camp.
